New York, November 30, 2015 -- Paul Williams, President of The ASCAP Foundation, and George Wein, Founder & Chairman of the Newport Jazz Festival, announced a new joint effort to benefit emerging jazz talent.  The Festival, one of the world's leading venues for jazz, has agreed to feature a performance by one of the recipients of the 2016 ASCAP Foundation Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards.

The Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards were established by The ASCAP Foundation in 2002 to encourage gifted jazz composers up to the age of 30. The program carries the name of the great trumpeter and ASCAP member Herb Alpert in recognition of The Herb Alpert Foundation's multi-year financial commitment to support this unique program. The recipients, who receive cash awards, are selected through a juried national competition.  The deadline for entering the 2016 competition is December 10, 2015. Thanks For A Wonderful Festival

8/17/2015

Picture
More than 23,100 music lovers turned out July 31 - August 2 for the 2015 Newport Jazz Festival presented by Natixis Global Asset Management.  Festival producer and Chairman of the Newport Festivals Foundation, George Wein, shares some thoughts on this year's event in his regular blog, The Wein Machine.
In a DownBeat magazine review of the 2015 Newport Jazz Festival, Allen Morrison wrote that "a festival as significant and storied as Newport can be a force for good or evil, wielding influence far in excess of its three-day duration. Considering its provenance...it is more than a tastemaker, it's a market-maker."

I welcomed these words as I read them in DownBeat. Our staff works literally all year long to produce the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. We know that there's a global influence in what we do with these two festivals. The jazz festival in particular has an international significance. Festival producers from all over the world join us to celebrate the beauty and glory that is jazz music.

to Showcase Emerging Performers

PictureSnarky Puppy
NEWPORT, RI, July 23, 2015 – The Newport Festivals Foundation Inc.™ announced today that it has received a $40,000 grant from the Rhode Island Foundation to help underwrite the third day of music featuring emerging artists and future icons at the historic Newport Jazz Festival® on Friday, July 31, at Fort Adams State Park.

A grant from the Rhode Island Foundation last year helped the Festival stage a third full day of performances for the first time in decades.

“We are grateful that the Rhode Island Foundation has chosen to invest in the Newport Festivals Foundation for the second consecutive year to help us not only bring new and exciting music to the area, but also to encourage more visitors to Newport for a longer duration,” said George Wein, Producer of the Newport Jazz Festival and Chairman of the Newport Festivals Foundation. “Over the past four years, we have presented 45 young artists that should become known to jazz fans, and we’re pleased that Friday at the Fort continues to be a perfect platform for nurturing the future of jazz.”

This year, the Foundation awarded $35,000 as part of its grantmaking in the arts and $5,000 through the Thomas DePetrillo and Carol Keefe Fund.
